DKI DPRD Member Frequently Receives Complaints About Rubbish in Tambora, Odour and Many Rats
JAKARTA - A member of the DKI Jakarta DPRD from the PDI Perjuangan faction, Hardiyanto Kenneth, has admitted to frequently receiving complaints from residents about the piling up of rubbish in Tambora sub-district, West Jakarta. Residents complain about mountains of rubbish that cause unpleasant smells while also triggering an increase in the population of flies and rats. “I often receive reports from residents disturbed by the rubbish accumulation. The smell is very unpleasant, and the number of flies and rats is also increasing,” Kenneth told Kompas.com on Monday (30/3/2026). “Rubbish accumulation not only damages the environmental aesthetics but also has the potential to cause public health problems,” he said. He urges the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency to immediately take concrete and sustainable steps in handling this issue. In addition, he encourages a thorough evaluation of the waste management system, including infrastructure, resources, and inter-agency coordination. A community-based approach is also considered important, for example, education on waste sorting at the source, reduction of single-use plastics, as well as strengthening the role of neighbourhood associations (RT and RW) and local communities. Kenneth hopes that in the near future, conditions in the Jembatan Besi and Kali Anyar areas, West Jakarta, can be well addressed. That way, residents can once again enjoy a clean, healthy, and comfortable environment to live in. “This must not be allowed to drag on,” said Kenneth.
