Divorces in Jakarta Reach 1,881 Cases; Call for Strengthened Family Development Ordinance
JAKARTA — The Democratic-Perindo faction of the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives regards the proposed Family Development regional ordinance as an essential foundation for strengthening the quality of human resources in the capital.
This position was expressed following the high number of divorces in Jakarta, which reached 1,881 cases throughout 2024.
“When families face economic pressure, relationship conflicts, or childcare challenges, the impact can expand into public problems,” said Dina Masyusin, Deputy Chair of the Democratic-Perindo faction at the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives, during a plenary session regarding the proposed Family Development ordinance at the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives building on Monday (9 March 2025).
According to Dina, such conditions could potentially trigger various social problems. For instance, children who lose complete family support are considered more vulnerable to school dropout, mental health disorders, and juvenile delinquency.
Additionally, the risk of domestic violence and drug abuse can increase if family problems are not addressed seriously. Inappropriate parenting patterns are also considered capable of producing a generation weakened in self-control, social empathy, and competitiveness.
“If not anticipated early, this condition can increase the social and fiscal burden on local government in the future,” said Dina.
Currently, according to the faction, family development programmes remain scattered across various regional agencies with sectoral approaches. The faction requested that the Jakarta Provincial Government explain concretely the institutional design that will coordinate the implementation of the ordinance to prevent programme overlaps between regional agencies.
They also highlighted the importance of data strengthening through an integrated Family Information System. This system is expected to serve as the basis for determining indicators of quality families and vulnerable families in Jakarta.
The Democratic-Perindo faction also emphasised the importance of protection services for vulnerable families through minimum service standards and rapid response mechanisms when families face social crises.
They stated that the objective of family development should not only improve family quality but also clearly prevent divorce, domestic violence, and other family problems.
“Data in the Family Information System also needs to be affirmed as the primary basis in planning and establishing family development programmes in Jakarta,” said Mujiyono.
