Disease Prevention Alert: Bojonegoro Health Office Advises Against Kissing and Pinching Babies During Eid
Eid celebrations are synonymous with family gatherings and reconnections, including interactions with babies and young children. However, the public is urged to exercise greater caution when interacting with infants to prevent disease transmission.
Rury Dewi, Head of Disease Prevention and Control at the Bojonegoro District Health Office, reminded the public to avoid kissing or pinching babies when visiting during Eid. Such actions can increase the risk of viral and bacterial transmission to infants.
According to Rury, baby skin remains highly sensitive and easily irritated. Additionally, direct contact such as kissing or pinching can make babies uncomfortable and even trigger stress.
“Babies have developing immune systems and are therefore more vulnerable to infection. Kissing or pinching babies during Eid gatherings should be avoided as it can increase the risk of viral and bacterial transmission,” Rury stated on Wednesday (18 March).
She added that various infectious diseases require attention beyond measles, including whooping cough, herpes, diphtheria, varicella (chickenpox), and parotitis (mumps).
Through this advisory, the Bojonegoro District Health Office encourages the community to maintain children’s health during Eid celebrations by reducing direct contact that risks disease transmission.
“Eid is a joyful occasion for family gatherings, but we must also protect children’s health. Let us together avoid actions that could transmit disease and safeguard our children’s wellbeing,” she added.
Furthermore, if a baby becomes ill during Eid, prioritise their health by consulting a paediatrician for appropriate treatment, ensure the baby receives adequate breast milk or formula, maintain proper hygiene in the surroundings, and avoid taking the baby to crowded places to prevent disease spread.
