Discussing Quality of Character-Based Islamic Religious Education Textbooks, UMJ Postgraduate School Graduates 105th Doctor
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Postgraduate School of Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta (SPs UMJ) has officially graduated its 105th Doctor in the field of Islamic Education Management. The event took place at the Dr. Syafri Guricci Auditorium on the 5th floor of the Faculty of Medicine and Health (FKK) UMJ, on Tuesday (5/5/2026).
The promovendus named Mustaqim successfully defended his dissertation titled Analysis of Quality Management in Islamic Religious Education Textbooks for Senior High Schools Oriented towards Character Education. He became a doctor with the cum laude predicate and a Cumulative Achievement Index of 3.88.
This research used a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis methods. Data was collected through document studies of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) high school textbooks published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Education, in-depth interviews with authors, editors, and PAI teachers, and observations of textbook usage in school environments.
Mustaqim explained that the research results show that the quality management of PAI textbooks has not fully met the principles of Total Quality Management (TQM) in the context of education. In the planning stage, the compilation of the books has referred to national curriculum standards, but it is not yet optimal in integrating character values.
He explained that in the implementation stage, the writing and editing process has been carried out systematically, while in the academic publishing aspect, the book already meets content, language, presentation, and graphic standards. Nevertheless, imbalances were still found in the integration of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects in the learning materials.
“Strengthening the quality management of PAI textbooks must be done comprehensively, not only in the technical aspects of writing but also in integrating character values in every learning component,” he said.
He added that in the supervision aspect, the quality assurance system has not yet operated in an integrated manner between the authoring institutions, publishers, and textbook users. Meanwhile, in the evaluation aspect, feedback from teachers and students has not been maximally utilised for improvements in content or learning design.
“Synergy between managerial, pedagogical, and spiritual value aspects is key to enhancing the quality of character-oriented PAI textbooks,” he stated.
