Residents of Lembongan Village, Nusa Penida District, Klungkung, Bali, were alarmed by the discovery of what are believed to be human remains on Ceningan Beach on Tuesday, 24 February 2026. The discovery was reported to Nusa Penida Police Sector (Polsek) for investigation and handling.

“Yes, that’s correct. There was indeed a discovery of what are believed to be human remains, which were no longer intact,” said Nusa Penida Police Sector Chief, Kompol I Ketut Kesuma Jaya, on Wednesday, 25 February 2026.

The skeletal remains were discovered by two local residents who were engaged in activities along the beach. At the time, they detected a foul smell and noticed something washed ashore on the beach.

The two residents initially believed the remains were from an animal. However, upon closer inspection and examination using a wooden stick, they suspected the remains were human and immediately reported the matter to police.

Shortly thereafter, police arrived at the discovery site, where several residents had already gathered. Officers immediately cordoned off the area, conducted a crime scene investigation, interviewed witnesses, and evacuated the remains.

Following the discovery, police coordinated with local residents, but none reported missing family members. Initial suspicion suggests that the body was carried by ocean currents before washing ashore at Ceningan Beach.

“When discovered, the body’s condition was already severely decomposed, with only skeletal remains remaining, which has complicated the initial identification process,” said Kesuma Jaya.

The human remains have been transported to Gema Santi Hospital in Nusa Penida for storage and safekeeping. Police continue their investigation to carry out identification.

“We also urge the public that if they believe they have a missing family member, they should report it immediately to facilitate the identification process,” stated Kesuma Jaya.
