Disasters in Aceh in 1995

BANDA ACEH, Aceh: The province recorded a total of 166 natural
disasters, including flash floods, fires, windstorms and
landslides in 1995.

All of the disasters caused a financial loss of Rp 4.4 billion
(US$ 1,925,601), Antara reported.

The agency quoted Ishak Hazamy at the local office of the
Ministry of Social Services as saying on Thursday that the number
of disasters was around 35 percent lower than those occurring in
1994.

A total of 245 natural disasters occurred in the province in
1994, causing material and financial losses of Rp 9.2 billion.

In 1995, a total of 10 people died, 31 were injured, 642
houses collapsed or were damaged, while 1,119 other houses were
slightly damaged.

Floods ruined 2,285 hectares of rice fields, as well as 275
hectares of fish and shrimp ponds last year.

Ishak revealed that the regions most prone to disasters here
are the regencies of South Aceh, West Aceh, Pidie, North Aceh,
East Aceh and Southeast Aceh. (swe)
