Dirgakkum Korlantas: ETLE Placement at Level Crossings Focuses on Prevention
“ETLE should not be viewed solely from the perspective of enforcement, but also from its preventive and educational aspects in creating awareness for compliance and obedience in traffic,” stated Brigadier General Faizal in his remarks on Tuesday (5/5/2026). Regarding the recent accident at the East Bekasi level crossing, the Indonesian National Police (Polri) has conveyed deep empathy to the families of the 16 fatalities. Brigadier General Faizal said that the legal process is proceeding transparently, prioritising scientific investigation methods. Polri is collaborating with all relevant stakeholders to scientifically uncover the facts of the incident. Factors such as the lack of crossing gates or on-site guards are part of the in-depth evaluation by investigators. “Examinations are being conducted comprehensively, from potential human error, vehicle conditions, to the completeness of road infrastructure at the incident site,” explained Brigadier General Faizal. Building Awareness Through Technology Brigadier General Faizal then explained the plan to install ETLE cameras at level crossings. He stated that this represents the state’s presence to prevent similar incidents in the future. The main focus is to build self-discipline among all road users. “The placement of ETLE cameras at level crossings is purely for early prevention through the role of public order and compliance. Not merely for issuing traffic tickets, but as a means of educating the public who will cross,” said the one-star general. Brigadier General Faizal emphasised the broader vision of the Polri Traffic Corps, which now prioritises a humane approach in line with directives from the Head of Traffic Corps, Inspector General Agus Suryonugroho. The success of traffic police is no longer measured by the number of field enforcements. “The Polri Traffic Corps and its units are not proud of enforcing the law, but rather of being present among the community through educational and preventive roles,” Faizal asserted. Brigadier General Faizal stressed that the state is present among the community in the wake of the railway level crossing accident tragedy in East Bekasi, to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Community participation is greatly needed to realise traffic safety, both on highways, level crossings, and other road infrastructure. “Polri, particularly the Traffic Police, remains proud as law enforcers. However, we prioritise restorative justice, law enforcement with heart, emphasising education, and building awareness for collective safety,” he explained. The Polri Traffic Corps, added Brigadier General Faizal, continues to urge the public to always increase vigilance and compliance when crossing railway tracks to achieve safety.
