Denpasar (ANTARA) - The Bali Provincial Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) has granted remission in connection with Eid al-Fitr to 1,639 inmates on the Island of the Gods.

“There are 26 Muslim inmates who are immediately released,” said the Head of the Bali Ditjenpas Regional Office, Decky Nurmansyah, in Denpasar, Bali, on Saturday.

Of the total realisation based on the remission granting decision letter, 15 of them are foreign national (WNA) inmates.

The amount of sentence reduction varies from 15 days to a maximum of two months.

The remission was given symbolically to the inmates after they completed Eid prayers in the courtyards of their respective correctional institutions or state detention centres.

The Bali Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections oversees 11 Technical Implementation Units (UPT), consisting of six correctional institutions (lapas), four state detention centres (rutan), and one Special Child Development Institution.

Decky explained that the sentence reduction received by the inmates is calculated based on Presidential Decree No. 174 of 1999 on remission and the remission granting mechanism based on Law No. 22 of 2022 on Corrections.

Meanwhile, one of the correctional UPTs in Bali that houses the most inmates and is considered to exceed capacity is the Kerobokan Class II-A Prison in Badung Regency.

Kerobokan Prison is home to 1,730 inmates and detainees, or 17 per cent over the intended capacity of 1,480 people.

At that prison, 570 inmates received Eid al-Fitr remission decision letters, 12 of whom are immediately released.

Of those 570 people, five are foreign nationals, each one from Syria, Russia, Turkey, Palestine, and Malaysia.

This special Eid al-Fitr 2024 remission serves as a form of the state’s presence to fulfil inmates’ rights, as well as recognition for inmates who have met the requirements and behaved well, to enhance nationalism and awareness of being a nation and state.

The Bali Ditjenpas Regional Office records that as of 18 March 2024, the number of inmates on the Island of the Gods reaches 4,654 people, with 3,623 of them being inmates and 1,031 being detainees.
