Being a university student is not merely about attending classes, completing assignments, and waiting for grades. Many students continue with a pattern of classroom attendance and returning home without engaging in additional activities that strengthen their professional portfolio.

This pattern is often referred to as the “butterfly student” approach. Amid the rapidly evolving needs of industry, this pattern undermines the competitiveness of graduates.

The development of the digital working world has made companies increasingly selective. Recruiters no longer merely examine grade point averages and degrees, but also practical skills that can be directly applied.

Digital skills in communication, online marketing, visual design, and data analysis have become significant added value for students and recent graduates.

Students can begin with relatively accessible skills. Graphic design using Canva or Photoshop can open opportunities for content projects and freelance work.

Digital marketing can be learned from the basics, such as search engine optimisation, social media management, and digital advertising. Coding and website development have also become sought-after competencies within industry and startup environments.

Additionally, data analytics has become an important advantage for business and management students. Various online learning platforms provide flexible courses along with certificates that can be directly displayed on CVs and LinkedIn profiles.

A digital portfolio becomes concrete evidence of these capabilities. A portfolio can take the form of a personal website, GitHub repository, or social media account showcasing work. With a portfolio, recruiters can assess capabilities directly, rather than merely from a written list of experience.

Mohamad Syamsul Aziz, Head of Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika (UBSI) Cikampek Campus, emphasised the importance of students developing competencies from the early stages of their university studies.

“Students today need to prepare themselves with skills that are relevant to industry needs. A digital portfolio and project experience will make graduates more prepared to compete, even before they graduate,” he said in a press statement in Bekasi on Monday, 2 March 2026.

The learning approach directed towards practical skills and workforce readiness has become an important resource for students in industrial areas such as Karawang and Cikampek. By mastering digital skills and building a portfolio, students not only graduate with grades, but also with real capabilities.

“Information on study programmes and registration routes for new UBSI students can be accessed through the official admissions page at https://pmbubsi.id/pmb for prospective students who wish to begin preparing their careers from the university bench,” said Syamsul.
