New regulation aims to protect children while strengthening platform accountability

Indonesia is set to implement a nationwide ban on social media use for children under 16, marking a major step in strengthening digital safety for young users.

Nationwide Policy Takes Effect Soo

The Indonesian government will enforce a ban on social media use for children under 16 starting March 28, 2026. The policy is part of broader efforts to protect minors in digital spaces and ensure safer online environments across the country.

Platforms Required to Enforce Restrictions

Under the regulation, digital platforms must deactivate accounts belonging to underage users and restrict the creation of new accounts. They are also required to implement stricter age verification systems, potentially integrating identity validation with national data systems.

Focus on Safer Digital Environments

In addition to access restrictions, platforms must introduce enhanced child protection features such as parental controls and stricter privacy settings. Measures also include limiting data collection from minors and filtering harmful or high-risk content.

Batam Prepares Local Implementation

The Batam city government has expressed readiness to support the policy through education and awareness campaigns. Efforts will include outreach programmes in schools and digital literacy initiatives targeting both students and parents.

Gradual Rollout and Public Adaptation

Authorities emphasised that the policy will be implemented in stages to allow platforms and the public time to adapt. The goal is to ensure the regulation is effective in practice, creating a healthier and more secure digital environment for children.

The new policy reflects Indonesia’s growing focus on digital safety, aiming to balance technological access with stronger protections for younger users.
