Differences Between Waste Bank Units and Parent Banks to Checking Their Locations in Jakarta
In Jakarta’s e-Waste Bank system, there are two types of waste banks commonly found: Waste Bank Units (BSU) and Parent Waste Banks (BSI). Both have different functions in managing community waste. Here is the explanation.
What is a Waste Bank in Jakarta?
Referring to the e-Waste Bank Jakarta Guidebook from the Jakarta Provincial Government’s Environment Agency (DLH), a waste bank is a community-based waste management programme based on the 3R principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle. Waste that has been sorted is then collected and weighed to generate economic value.
Through the e-Waste Bank Jakarta system, the public can search for waste bank locations, record waste deposit transactions, and monitor the value of waste savings digitally. This system was also created to support the reduction of waste volume disposed to the Bantargebang landfill.
Differences Between Waste Bank Units and Parent Banks
Referring to the official e-Waste Bank Jakarta guide, Waste Bank Units or BSUs are waste banks that directly receive waste deposits from the public or customers. In its system flow, customers save waste at the BSU, then the BSU records weighing transactions and the sale of recyclable waste.
BSUs can also sell recyclable waste to Parent Waste Banks or offtakers. In the e-Waste Bank system, BSUs have menus for customer data, waste bank activities, waste price categories, and customer weighing transactions.
Meanwhile, Parent Waste Banks or BSIs serve to collect the results of waste collection from BSUs before passing them on to offtakers or further processors. In the e-Waste Bank Jakarta system, BSIs have data on BSU networks, waste sale transactions, and broader waste management reports.
In simple terms, BSUs are places where the public deposits waste directly, while BSIs function as connectors for waste management on a larger scale.
How to Check Waste Bank Locations in Jakarta
Information on the locations of BSUs and BSIs available in Jakarta can be checked online through the e-Waste Bank Jakarta website (banksampah.jakarta.go.id). On the dashboard menu, there is a “Location” feature that contains a map of waste bank points across all Jakarta areas.
On the Jakarta Waste Bank map page, there is information including BSU location points marked in green, while BSI location points are marked in red. The public can search for locations by city, sub-district, village, up to RT/RW.
By understanding the differences between BSUs and BSIs, the public is expected to more easily participate in the waste sorting movement in Jakarta. The existence of waste banks also plays an important role in efforts to reduce waste at the source.
