Did Angels Perform Hajj 2,000 Years Before Prophet Adam? Fact or Fiction?
Who was the first to perform the Hajj pilgrimage? This question has long been debated by Islamic scholars and historians. Classical literature cites several opinions, ranging from angels, Prophet Adam (peace be upon him), to Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) as the first to perform Hajj at the Baitullah. The hadith is narrated by Imam al-Mufadhdhal al-Ja’di and also by Ibn Jauzi from the chain of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), but it is deemed unreliable. Other literature explains the early history of the Kaaba (Baitullah) in Masjid al-Haram, Mecca. There are three opinions regarding the Kaaba’s origin. Some historians state that the Kaaba was first built by angels before the creation of the Earth. This is referenced in the Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 30, where Allah Almighty states: ‘And [recall] when your Lord said to the angels, ’Indeed, I will place a successive authority upon the earth.’ They said, ‘Will You place upon it one who will cause corruption and shed blood, while we exalt You with praise and sanctify You?’ He said, ‘Indeed, I know what you do not know.’”
