Despite Restrictions, Drivers from Basangkasa Continue to Violate One-Way Traffic System on Sunset Road

The Badung Regency government is now implementing a one-way traffic management system on Jalan Raya Taman, Kerobokan Kelod, to alleviate vehicle congestion from the Basangkasa area towards Sunset Road. Although traffic flow is currently smooth, a number of drivers have been found to be violating the route by continuing to head east instead of turning around to follow the new route.

“The essence of a trial period is socialisation, therefore the enforcement will not be repressive but rather persuasive. Once it is established as a permanent policy, then enforcement will be carried out by the police,” said the Head of the Badung Transportation Department, Anak Agung Ngurah Rai Yuda Darma, on Wednesday (25/2/2026).

This change in traffic flow in the Kerobokan Kelod area has been in effect for two months as a response to the imbalance between road capacity and the rapid growth of vehicles. This policy is a direct instruction from the Regent of Badung to improve infrastructure in the tourism support area, which is experiencing massive development.

Most recently, Jalan Kayu Aya has been changed to a one-way street from east to west for cars only, from the intersection of Jalan Drupadi to the west. Meanwhile, motorcyclists can still travel from east to west and vice versa.

Meanwhile, Jalan Raya Taman is designed as a one-way street from east to west for all vehicles, and vehicles from Basangkasa or the south are prohibited from turning right or onto Sunset Road, but must turn around to the west.

“The only option that must be done is to implement the change in traffic flow, because if it is not done now, it will have fatal consequences for transportation services. Although the distance travelled is longer, the essence of this one-way system is to eliminate conflicts at intersections, thus significantly reducing travel time,” explained Rai Yuda.

According to technical data from the Transportation Department, this traffic management scheme is claimed to be effective, although there are social and economic dynamics in the community. The local government ensures that it will provide special intervention if the policy proves to have a negative impact on residents in the long term.

“It is natural that there are aspirations that are conveyed directly to the Regent, we think not partially but comprehensively in order to provide traffic services to the community. We create a policy for the greater good, not just for the benefit of one party,” he said.

Further evaluations will continue to be carried out by the Badung Road Traffic and Transportation Forum (LLAJ), involving the police and local authorities of North Kuta and Kuta. The focus of future improvements will be on supporting infrastructure, especially the widening of intersections at several critical points to prevent vehicle congestion.

“We have reported to the Regent regarding the constraints of widening the intersections in Matanadi Utara and Jalan Pengubengan Kauh Selatan so that the Public Works and Spatial Planning Department can immediately realise it. If that is completed, I am confident that the congestion and vehicle delays on that route can be completely resolved,” concluded Rai Yuda.
