Despite Darkness and Steep Gradient, Cattle Tunnel in Cikarang Becomes Residents' Lifeline to Avoid Traffic

In Pasirtanjung Village, Cikarang Pusat District, Bekasi Regency, beneath the Jakarta–Cikampek toll road, there exists an earth tunnel that local residents have nicknamed the “Cattle Tunnel”.

Despite falling far short of standard public road specifications, this passage has become a vital route for two-wheeled vehicle users seeking to reduce their travel time when congestion strikes the Tegal Danas area.

The tunnel connects Kalimalang Inspection Road with the Deltamas area extending to Sukamahi Village. This access route is frequently chosen by riders heading to the Bekasi District Government Complex, AEON Mall, and the Greenland International Industrial Center (GIIC).

Inside the tunnel, lighting is extremely minimal. Light enters only from both ends of the passage, leaving the middle section dark and damp. The concrete walls appear worn, marked by water seepage and graffiti.

Towards late afternoon, the atmosphere becomes increasingly busy. Several cattle herders pass through, driving cattle and goats from hillside grazing areas on either side of the tunnel.

According to users, if they were forced to take a detour via Tegal Danas, their travel time could stretch to nearly an hour during peak congestion.

“If you go around it takes nearly an hour in traffic. That’s why it’s better to go through here even though it’s a bit scary,” one rider said.

As local residents, they acknowledge being accustomed to passing through, even at night. “Because we’re used to it, we’ll pass through here even at night. Unless it’s raining, muddy and slippery, then we’re forced to take the other route,” another explained.
