Designer Deden Siswanto Transforms Scarves into Garments Without Cutting to Reduce Textile Waste
Sustainable fashion concepts are increasingly being adopted by designers in their collections. One such example is designer Deden Siswanto, who showcased his vision at the Raya Soiree fashion show held at Central Park Mall in West Jakarta.
In this collection, Deden presented garment designs that utilise scarves as the primary material. “I created these two pieces from scarves without cutting them,” Deden explained when interviewed after the fashion show on Saturday, 7 March 2026.
Through this approach, the fabric remains intact and generates no textile waste. Deden elaborated that the zero-waste concept is one way to introduce more sustainable fashion practices. Rather than cutting fabric as is typical in conventional garment production, he chose to preserve the original form of the scarves used.
“Because we want to implement sustainable concepts, we make garments without cutting and without discarding material,” he said.
According to Deden, leftover fabric can be repurposed as additional ornamental elements, such as flowers or small accessories that complement the design. In this manner, nearly all material is utilised without generating textile waste.
Deden noted that sustainable fashion does not necessarily require complex techniques or specific materials. According to him, designer creativity is the key to producing more environmentally friendly garments. “Anything can be achieved with creativity,” he concluded.
