Deputy Speaker of the MPR Discusses Indonesia’s Status in the BoP Following US-Israel Attack on Iran

The leadership of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) is pressing the Indonesian government’s pledge regarding its presence in the Board of Peace (BoP), an initiative conceived and established by former United States President Donald Trump.

This followed Trump leading his country in collaboration with Israel in attacking Iran, escalating Middle East tensions during Ramadan.

MPR Deputy Speaker Hidayat Nur Wahid urged the government to withdraw Indonesia from the BoP, arguing that it no longer aligns with the original vision of peace, especially in the Middle East. He highlighted the United States’ actions that now risk provoking war and drawing other regional states into conflict.

‘The recent events show war being sparked everywhere. I think it would be wise for him to seriously consider this, and there are more than 64 scholars and about 60 organisations who have signed a petition for Indonesia to leave the BoP,’ Hidayat said at the Parliament complex in Jakarta on Tuesday (3 March).

The senior PKS politician also welcomed the calls by several organisations for Indonesia to withdraw from the BoP in the wake of the tense Middle East situation following the U.S.-Israel attack on Iran, which also killed its supreme leader Ayatullah Ali Khamenei.

Hidayat stated that he does not want Indonesia to become a stamp and legitimacy for the US to widen the war.

‘Because the BoP apparently contributes to war,’ he said.

‘With the BoP, war does not stop; it even spreads everywhere,’ he added.

Previously, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) had openly criticised the BoP position, which was proposed and formed by U.S. President Donald Trump, for Gaza and Middle East stability.

MUI questioned the BoP’s position — in which Indonesia is also a member — when the United States is collaborating with Israel to bombard Iran with rockets or missiles.

According to MUI, the United States is playing a role in the conflict through the BoP.

‘Therefore, MUI urges the Indonesian government to withdraw from BoP because it is seen as ineffective in realising true peace in Palestine,’ the statement said in MUI’s Tausiyah letter No: Kep-28/DP-MUI/III/2026.

Additionally, PP Muhammadiyah urged the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to take a stance and impose sanctions on the U.S. and Israel for their attacks on Iran.

Condemnation also came from the Indonesian Council of Churches (PGI). Quoting its official site, PGI expressed concern about the escalation and military actions in the Middle East region because they could trigger a global crisis, and urged the relevant states to halt them.

In a statement signed by PGI’s General Chairman Jacklevyn Frits Manuputty and Secretary General Darwin Dharmawan, PGI assessed that the situation has destabilised the region and increased the risk of the conflict widening between nations.

‘PGI condemns various military actions by several states, including the involvement of the United States and Israel against Iran, as well as the clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and Iranian retaliation in the region, which it says further broadens the circle of violence and threatens international security,’ the statement read.

PGI also called for an end to all military actions and urged the United Nations, international bodies, governments, and the global community to prioritise dialogue and to comply with international humanitarian law.

Staying with the BoP, but Possible to Re-evaluate

However, according to statements from several parties who met with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday night, Indonesia’s membership in the BoP remains active for now.

That night, Prabowo invited former presidents and vice presidents, former foreign ministers, and party leaders from Parliament to the Presidential Palace in Jakarta. The meeting discussed the escalation of the war between Iran, the United States, and Israel.

The meeting lasted about four hours, beginning at 19:30 WIB, with guests leaving around 23:30.

After the meeting, NasDem Party Chairman Surya Paloh said Indonesia would remain in the BoP. Nevertheless, Paloh noted that Prabowo was not closed to re-evaluating Indonesia’s BoP membership in light of the current situation.

‘As of today, perhaps we remain in that position, unless there is progress with several other countries to re-evaluate the meaning of Indonesia’s presence in the BoP with some other countries,’ he said.

Paloh said Prabowo also outlined his decision to bring Indonesia into the BoP.

‘He reiterated how to maintain an independent and active policy, and the compassion and empathy for the Palestinian people’s struggle were reaffirmed,’ he said.

Former Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda, who was also present at the palace, said Prabowo explained that BoP’s chances of success in achieving its peace mission could fall due to the escalation in the Middle East.

‘It was also stated. It was repeated. Especially with the war in Iran, the impression that the BoP and the mission aimed at ceasefire, truce, humanitarian aid, rehabilitation, and reconstruction could be less likely to succeed,’ Hasan said after the meeting at the palace last night.

Hasan also noted that Prabowo is considering next steps for Indonesia’s BoP membership amid the escalating conflict.

‘There is that sense, and from his communication with other heads of state, particularly within the OIC, the impression is that BoP’s potential to succeed is diminishing; we will see how developments unfold,’ he said.
