Deputy Speaker of MPR Urges Government to Simplify Medical Examination Services for Violence Victims
Deputy Speaker of the MPR RI, Lestari Moerdijat, emphasised that protecting victims of violence should be a shared responsibility. She believes that victims should have easy access to justice, including medical examinations. Lestari Moerdijat stated that efforts should be made to simplify the process for victims of violence to undergo medical examinations. “Efforts to facilitate medical examinations for victims of violence, as part of protection measures, should be simplified,” Lestari said in a written statement on Tuesday (24 February 2026). This statement comes following the issuance of Presidential Regulation No. 59 of 2024, which stipulates that BPJS Kesehatan (the national health insurance scheme) will no longer cover the costs of medical examinations and healthcare services related to domestic violence or sexual violence. This policy means that victims will have to bear the costs of medical examinations themselves, ranging from IDR 150,000 to IDR 300,000. To access medical examination services without incurring personal costs, victims are encouraged to report to the Witness and Victim Protection Agency or use emergency mechanisms. According to Lestari, the process for obtaining medical examinations for victims of violence should be simplified, given that the results of the examination are an important part of protecting and fighting for justice for the victims. According to Rerie, Lestari’s nickname, due to the impact of the violence they have experienced, victims often find it difficult to report to law enforcement authorities to obtain the medical examinations required under Presidential Regulation No. 59 of 2024. Rerie, who is also a member of Commission X of the DPR RI, believes that the costs of the medical examinations add to the burden on victims in their pursuit of justice. The member of the High Council of the NasDem Party hopes that all relevant parties can work together to build a comprehensive protection system for victims of violence in the country. She said that this is to fulfil the mandate of the 1945 Constitution, which guarantees security, justice, and welfare for every citizen without discrimination. (prf/ega)
