Makassar — Year 2024 has been recorded as one of the periods with the highest temperatures, serving as a serious warning for the world, including Indonesia.

Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Eddy Soeparno has called for an integrated approach through synergies of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) and Engineered-Based Solutions (EBS) as an effort to confront the increasingly concerning climate crisis.

Soeparno, speaking in Makassar, South Sulawesi on Wednesday, stated that in this modern era many parties remain insufficiently aware of the threats posed by the climate crisis. Yet the impacts of climate change have already begun to be felt tangibly in daily life.

He explained that the world faces three major disruptions affecting global living arrangements: the COVID-19 pandemic, developments in artificial intelligence (AI), and global geopolitical conflicts. All three influence the stability of global energy and economics.

“Year 2024 has been recorded as one of the periods with the highest temperatures, serving as a serious warning for the world, including Indonesia,” he said.

Furthermore, he continued, waste management in Indonesia is currently in a state of emergency. National waste production reaches approximately 52 million tonnes per year, yet only about 40 per cent can be managed.

“As an effort to confront this crisis, an integrated approach is required through Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) and Engineered-Based Solutions (EBS),” said Eddy Soeparno.

“This approach can serve as a strategic pillar in addressing the climate crisis, whilst simultaneously strengthening national economic and energy resilience through utilisation of natural resources and development of low-carbon technology,” he added.
