Jakarta – Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Migrant Worker Protection Christina Aryani has commended the swift action taken by the Foreign Ministry in facilitating the evacuation of Indonesian citizens, including two migrant workers, from Iran.

“We appreciate the rapid steps taken by the Foreign Ministry and Indonesian diplomatic representatives in facilitating the return of Indonesian citizens from Iran, including two migrant workers. The safety of citizens, including migrant workers, is a priority for the government,” Aryani stated in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday (11 March).

The evacuation effort was undertaken following escalating conflict in the Middle East region, particularly resulting from attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran.

Aryani said the evacuation measure demonstrated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Indonesian citizens abroad, including migrant workers.

A total of 32 Indonesian citizens are being evacuated in stages from Iran. They comprise 10 professional workers, one educator or journalist, 14 students, two migrant workers, and five tourists.

The two migrant workers are Ali Husein and Tetap Segar, both from West Java who work in the manufacturing sector and arrived in Indonesia from Iran on 10 March 2026.

“Based on coordination with the Foreign Ministry’s Directorate for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens Abroad, both of these migrant workers were also evacuated last year,” Aryani said.

According to a statement from the Foreign Ministry, the evacuation of Indonesian citizens from Iran was conducted in two stages. Twenty-two people in the first stage arrived safely at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, on Tuesday after travelling from Baku, Azerbaijan.

Meanwhile, the remaining 10 Indonesian citizens are scheduled to arrive in the second stage on Wednesday.

Aryani emphasised that although Iran is not an official placement country for Indonesian migrant workers, the government nonetheless provides protection to all Indonesian citizens in the region.

“Although Iran is not an official placement country for migrant workers, the government is committed to ensuring that every Indonesian citizen receives protection, especially in emergency situations such as conflict,” she said.

She added that the Migrant Worker Protection Ministry continues to coordinate with the Foreign Ministry and Indonesian diplomatic missions in the Middle East to monitor the situation and ensure migrant workers remain protected.

“Cross-ministerial coordination and coordination with Indonesian missions abroad continues to be carried out to ensure the condition of Indonesian citizens, including migrant workers, remains well monitored,” Aryani said.

According to data from the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran, approximately 329 Indonesian citizens are currently in Iran. The majority are students concentrated in the city of Qom, whilst the remainder are workers and expatriates.
