JAKARTA — The Deputy Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak, disclosed that approximately 2,000 Indonesian pilgrims were stranded or delayed during their return from the Holy Land to Indonesia.

The disruptions occurred during transit flights from Saudi Arabia to other Middle Eastern countries affected by the conflict between the United States and Israel with Iran.

“Those who were stranded — I don’t have exact data yet as we haven’t received all updates. But they have all returned now, as there were some stranded. There were around 2,000 who departed,” Dahnil stated at the Presidential Palace Complex in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.

“When there are direct flights, it usually works smoothly. However, with transit connections, ticket prices become expensive, forcing many to remain there temporarily whilst searching for affordable tickets,” he explained.

Currently, approximately 43,000 pilgrims are performing umrah worship in Mecca and Medina.

The government is preparing various efforts and scenarios for the hajj pilgrimage, which is scheduled to commence in April. If no obstacles arise, the departure of the first hajj contingent is planned for 22 April.

“If there are no changes in the scenario or if the conflict escalates downward and this ensures the safety of Indonesian citizens performing hajj, then 22 April will see the departure of the first contingent. However, the President’s instructions are clear — all conditions and all scenarios must be prepared,” Dahnil stated.

Several scenarios are being prepared, including the selection of safer flight routes and the option to postpone departures if conditions are deemed potentially dangerous for pilgrims.

Additionally, the government is maintaining intensive inter-ministerial coordination to ensure the hajj pilgrimage proceeds safely.

“We will also discuss various scenarios with Parliament if the conflict shows signs that could endanger our hajj pilgrims,” Dahnil said.
