Deputy Minister for Housing and Settlement urges Southeast Sulawesi to push mining firms downstream into tourism
Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi – Deputy Minister for Housing and Settlement (PKP) Fahri Hamzah has urged the Southeast Sulawesi Provincial Government (Sultra) to push mining companies to also undertake downstreaming into non-mining sectors, particularly tourism. Speaking during a working visit in Kendari on Thursday, Fahri Hamzah said the move aims to ensure regional development on Bumi Anoa does not rely solely on extractive industries, but also fosters economic sustainability through available natural resources.
“Mining companies should also downstream into non-mining sectors to help improve the area. Do not just exploit natural resources, but the responsibility for environmental rehabilitation should not be neglected,” Fahri Hamzah said during his working visit to the Pola Room at the Sultra Governor’s Office.
He noted that the tourism sector represents a promising economic alternative for Sultra. With its coastal and marine park potential, the region is believed to attract investment if managed professionally and well planned.
In light of rapid urban population growth, Fahri said there is a need for comprehensive housing development planning to prevent uncontrolled density in areas.
“The PKP Ministry stands ready to provide support in housing renovation planning, area development, and the construction of new housing, particularly in areas still characterised by slums,” He said.
Fahri Hamzah also hopes that collaboration between local governments and the private sector, especially mining companies, can accelerate Southeast Sulawesi’s economic transformation from dependence on raw commodities to service and tourism sectors that are sustainable.
