Deputy Governor of Jakarta, Rano Karno, has praised the digital-based community security system, or smart gate, implemented by residents of RT 11 RW 07 in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. Rano is pushing for the system to serve as a model for other areas in Jakarta.

Rano made the remarks during a visit to RT 11 RW 07, where he also presented a 1-ton sacrificial cow for Eid al-Adha on Wednesday (27 May 2026). He stated that community-based security systems could provide a solution to enhance safety in residential areas.

“If this system is implemented in every alley, at least the area will be safe,” Rano said.

Rano believes Jakarta’s security is not solely the responsibility of authorities but also the public. He said the ‘Jaga Jakarta’ (Keep Jakarta Safe) slogan stems from residents’ awareness of safeguarding their own neighbourhoods.

“Why the ‘Jaga Jakarta’ slogan? It has nothing to do with the military or police. If Jakarta’s residents don’t care, but once they do, safeguarding Jakarta should be our collective responsibility,” he added.

According to Rano, successful community security systems are difficult to achieve without resident involvement. He acknowledged that such innovations might initially face resistance, but the benefits become evident once implemented.

“Oh, it’s troublesome with all this music and that,” but once they experience it themselves, they’re okay,” he said.

During the visit, Rano also urged local area managers to share their experiences and provide training to other regions interested in adopting similar systems.

“Hopefully this can be replicated. That means the local officials are ready to provide training. We will invite several villages to explain the system,” he said.

The RT 11 RW 07 head, Imam Basori, said the Smart Kampung Pintar innovation began from residents’ concerns about community security. He explained that the system was initially conventional but was changed to digital to heighten residents’ vigilance.

“Initially, this stemmed from Ramadan when community concerns arose. We transformed the conventional system into a more modern, fully digital one,” Imam said.

Imam explained that the security system in his area includes not only e-gates but also panic buttons linked to residents’ smartphones, a ‘Jaga Warga’ app, neighbourhood patrols, and GPS tracking.

“We don’t just have e-gates; we also have panic buttons that alert smartphones, the Jaga Warga app, patrols, and GPS,” he said.

He stated all innovations were built using RT operational funds maximised for residents’ benefit. According to him, RT 11 RW 07 does not impose monthly resident fees.

“There are no resident fees here. We maximise all funds to serve the residents. Essentially, the operational funds are from the people, by the people, and for the people,” he added.

Rano also stated his readiness to support the innovation’s development, including sourcing corporate social responsibility (CSR) support to strengthen the system if needed. He noted that environmental security innovations must also consider emergency scenarios such as power outages.

“What if there’s a power cut? That also needs to be considered. We’ll help brainstorm solutions and source CSR support,” he added.
