Timika - The Deputy Governor of Southwest Papua (PBD), Ahmad Nausrau, fully supports the programme to construct and rehabilitate 21,000 decent homes to address the high housing needs of residents in Papua. Contacted from Timika on Thursday, Deputy Governor Ahmad Nausrau stated that he attended a coordination meeting chaired by Interior Minister Tito Karnavian in Jakarta on Wednesday (15/4) to finalise the programme for building and rehabilitating decent homes for Papuan residents. The meeting was also attended by Housing Minister Maruarar Sirait, Head of BPS Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, and representatives from various regions in Papua. “We view this programme as a strategic step in addressing the basic needs of the community. With the high housing needs still prevailing in Papua, this programme is very important. The regional government is ready to support its implementation to ensure it truly targets those most in need,” said Ahmad Nausrau. The programme to build and rehabilitate 21,000 homes for Papuan residents is implemented through the Self-Help Housing Stimulus Assistance (BSPS) scheme with a national socio-economic data-based approach. BSPS is a government programme under the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP) for 2025/2026, designed to assist low-income communities (MBR) in improving or building decent homes independently. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the disparity or gap between the number of homes needed by the community and the number of available built homes in Papua, especially in the four new autonomous regions (DOB), remains very high. For the Papua Pegunungan region, the gap is 89.14 per cent, Central Papua 66.93 per cent, South Papua 44.85 per cent, and Southwest Papua 36.35 per cent. The launch of the programme to build and rehabilitate 21,000 decent homes in Papua is scheduled for 27 April 2026 in Sorong, the capital of Southwest Papua Province.
