Deputy Environment Minister Sets Target for 600 KAI Stations to Implement Waste Management Programme
Deputy Minister of Environment Diaz Hendropriyono, who also serves as Deputy Head of the Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH), urged PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI) to immediately implement a waste management programme at all railway stations across Indonesia. “I very much appreciate KAI’s actions, including building and activating TPS3R in Jakarta and beyond,” Diaz said on Friday (22 May). “This aligns with KLH’s vision and mission, so KAI is very helpful in addressing waste problems according to the strategy of activating TPS3R. I hope this can be implemented at all stations in Indonesia.” PT KAI was asked not only to provide waste facilities but also to actively educate and socialise to drive behavioural change among passengers and communities living along the railway lines. “I heard that PT KAI has 600 stations and 7,000 km of rail, and there is a significant amount of waste. In certain areas, people still throw rubbish onto the tracks. So it’s not just about providing facilities, but also about building awareness of sorting among passengers, KAI workers, and the wider public,” Diaz emphasised. To support this programme, Diaz stated that KLH/BPLH is ready to collaborate to realise clean and waste-free railway stations nationwide. “Here we can collaborate with KLH; we can provide modules or guidance to raise sorting awareness, assistance for reactivating TPS3R and waste banks, and we can collaborate to find off-takers. So whatever can be done, we can collaborate together,” he explained. The waste management programme is also included in the RPJMN with a target of 100% waste management by 2029. “Gubernur DKI has declared 100% waste sorting by August; this is part of the President’s big target through RPJMN, namely that by 2029 100% waste will be managed, achieved through waste sorting,” he concluded.
