Deputy Coordinating Minister Otto Praises DPR for Uncovering Controversial Legal Cases
Semarang (ANTARA) - Deputy Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Services Otto Hasibuan has appreciated the role of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) in overseeing several legal cases deemed controversial within society.
“In my view, what the DPR has done is appropriate, especially since the oversight is directed at matters that concern the public,” Otto said in Semarang on Saturday.
The statement was made after attending the appointment and briefing of advocates as well as the national seminar of the Indonesian Advocates Association (Peradi) in Semarang City.
Otto cited, for example, that Commission III of the DPR has been involved several times in highlighting legal cases that have drawn public attention, including the case of a snatch theft victim in Sleman who was briefly made a suspect after striking and killing the perpetrator.
He explained that the DPR has an oversight function, while Commission III specifically oversees the performance of law enforcement apparatus as working partners.
“Sometimes this is seen as intervention, but there must be a distinction between oversight and intervention,” he stated.
“If the DPR does not earnestly carry out its oversight function, then change in society will not occur,” he added.
He further noted that differences in perspectives between the DPR and law enforcement officials are a natural dynamic in a democratic system.
“This is something to be grateful for. The DPR carries out its oversight function, while law enforcement can make corrections if there are errors. That is good, especially in cases that concern people’s lives,” said Otto.
