Deputy Chief of Police: Polri's Public Relations Division Must Serve as Guardian of Truth Amidst the Rapid Flow of Information
In the midst of the rapid flow of unverified digital information, the Polri Public Relations Division has affirmed its role as the foremost guard in ensuring that the public receives accurate and trustworthy information.
This was stated by Deputy Chief of Police Komjen Dedi Prasetyo during the Polri Public Relations Technical Working Meeting for Fiscal Year 2026, held at the Grandhika Hotel in South Jakarta on Tuesday, 14 April 2026.
The Deputy Chief of Police emphasised that the challenges facing the Public Relations Division are growing with the massive spread of hoaxes and disinformation in the digital space.
“In the midst of the rapid flow of information, Polri’s Public Relations is present not only to convey news but to ensure that what reaches the public is the truth,” he said.
According to him, in the current social media era, information can spread faster than the verification process. This situation has the potential to cause public anxiety if not balanced with fast, precise, and credible communication.
Indirectly, Dedi affirmed that without a strong public relations role, the public is highly vulnerable to exposure to misleading information, which can trigger panic to social conflicts.
“Wrong information can cause anxiety, but correct information can maintain calm. That is where the role of Public Relations becomes very important,” he said.
Furthermore, he explained that the Polri Public Relations Division has developed a modern technology-based communication system, including the use of big data and artificial intelligence (AI), to detect, analyse, and respond to issues quickly and accurately.
These capabilities allow Polri’s Public Relations not only to clarify but also to anticipate the potential spread of disinformation before it develops widely in society.
This former Head of Polri’s Public Relations Division also emphasised that the information war in the current digital era is a real challenge that must be faced seriously by the Polri institution, where Public Relations plays a central role in maintaining public information stability.
He added that the presence of Polri’s Public Relations is not merely an institutional communication function but part of the state’s efforts to protect society from the negative impacts of untrue information.
In closing his remarks, Dedi reminded all Public Relations personnel to continue improving speed, accuracy, and credibility in delivering information to the public.
