Deputy Chair of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Lestari Moerdijat has called for strengthening inclusive education through enhanced teacher skills development. This strengthening is vital to achieve quality educational services for all citizens.

“To provide quality educational services to every Indonesian citizen, efforts to increase the number of teachers capable of teaching children with special needs must be realised immediately,” Lestari stated on Monday (16 March 2026).

According to data from the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) as of September 2025, there are 363,921 students with disabilities throughout Indonesia. Of this number, 199,375 students study at 60,910 inclusive education institutions (SPPI).

However, ironically, only approximately 15% of these educational institutions have specialist teaching assistants (GPK). Lestari believes this situation hinders the creation of equal educational services for all citizens.

Lestari emphasised that government consistency in increasing the number of specialist teaching assistants is greatly needed. He also supports the government’s plan to provide training for teachers this year so they can develop competence in accompanying children with special needs.

This member of the House of Representatives’ Tenth Commission also called on the central government, local governments, and communities to work together collaboratively to accelerate the realisation of the programme.

“Synergy amongst all parties is greatly needed so that fair and equitable inclusive educational services for every citizen can be realised soon,” he concluded.
