I Putu Bayu Ekayana was once puzzled when he took over the family business of Depot Betty in 2013. At that time, he had to continue the roast pork eatery that his family had started in 2001 due to his mother’s declining health.

“Initially, I was confused because my background was as a bartender, which is very different from the world of cooking,” he said in a written statement on Wednesday (22/4/2025).

Bayu then learned to manage the roast pork depot located in Pancasari, Tabanan, Bali. He strengthened aspects of service, cleanliness, and hygiene standards without changing the family heirloom recipe.

Bayu then applied for People’s Business Credit (KUR) from BRI in 2014 to develop the culinary business. The additional capital was also used to tidy up financial management.

According to Bayu, the KUR from BRI helped develop his business and maintain the sustainability of his family enterprise. Moreover, he was assisted by the state-owned bank from the application process until repayment. “From the beginning, we were helped, and the credit repayment also went smoothly,” he explained.

Depot Betty, Bayu continued, now adopts a cashless payment system across all its eateries. All transactions at the three depots are automatically recorded through BRI’s QRIS system, BRImo, and EDC.

“With digitalisation, all income is recorded. So it’s easier to control finances and the risk of loss can be minimised,” said Bayu.

The transaction notification feature on BRImo also helps Bayu minimise the risk of recording errors or potential fund losses, as every transaction is immediately monitored via mobile phone. This flexibility adds value in maintaining operational efficiency.

Bayu noted that around 50 percent of transactions at all Depot Betty outlets are cashless. These cashless payments are dominated by young buyers and are increasingly followed by older age groups. “Now it’s not just Gen Z; older people are also using cashless payments a lot because it’s practical,” he said.

Depot Betty now consumes 5 to 6 pigs per day across all depots. The raw materials are sourced from local farmers in the Pancasari, Candikuning, to Baturiti areas in Tabanan.

Bayu is currently focused on maintaining business stability. Surviving amid the onslaught of new culinary businesses has become the top priority rather than aggressive expansion. “We focus on how this business continues to run well and maximises what we already have,” he emphasised.

Regional CEO of BRI Region 17 Denpasar, Hery Noercahya, explained that digitalisation is the main key for MSMEs to survive and develop amid current market dynamics. “BRI is committed to continuously promoting MSME digitalisation through the provision of digital banking services, mentoring, and an integrated ecosystem so that MSMEs can level up and expand market access, both nationally and globally,” he stated.

BRI, Hery added, offers various digital services such as the BRImo super app, QRIS, and an MSME empowerment platform that makes it easier for business actors to conduct transactions efficiently and securely. Through these various initiatives, the state-owned bank is optimistic about continuing to contribute to driving regional economic growth and strengthening the role of MSMEs as the backbone of the national economy.
