Denpasar Sacrificial Animal Vendors Lament Plummeting Sales This Year

Two days before Eid al-Adha, sales of sacrificial animals in Denpasar remain sluggish, with vendors facing potential losses due to plummeting demand.

One such vendor is Najib (54), a sacrificial animal seller on Mahendradatta Street in West Denpasar. “Sales this year are different from last year, declining somewhat. Yes, losses, down about 40 per cent,” he said when interviewed at his stall on Monday, 25 May 2026.

“Sales haven’t peaked yet. Usually around this time, stock would be sold out. But this year, there’s still a lot left,” he added.

He noted that current sales are less than half of what they were at the same period last year.

“This year, I’ve sold 60 to 80 goats; last year it was around 90. But yes, it’s declined – this year, I still have 60 left,” Najib explained.

Prices for the goats vary by size, ranging from Rp2.5 million to Rp5.5 million. He sources them from collectors in Buleleng and admits to making only a slim profit per goat.

“The main issue is high procurement costs, long transport distances, and fewer buyers this year. Perhaps the economy is weakening,” he added.

“It’s my risk; I sell outright to the collectors. So if they don’t sell, it’s my loss. I either have to raise them myself or sell at a loss,” Najib said.

He hopes the situation improves. “Hopefully the economy gets better and buyer demand increases,” he concluded.
