Demands grow for governor to quit
BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: Hundreds of people staged a
protest at the provincial legislative council here on Monday to
demand that South Kalimantan Governor Sjachriel Darham quit.
The protesters accused the local government of being involved
in corruption cases and often lying to constituents during his
term of office.
They did not give specific details about their allegations
against the governor during the demonstration jointly organized
by the United Action for those Concerned with People's Suffering
(Kappera) and the Red Legion Command.
The protesters held up numerous banners carrying anti-
Sjachriel slogans. "Save South Kalimantan from the greedy
governor's leadership," one banner read.
They also called on others to stop Sjachriel from continuing
to "eat the people's money".
Similar protests were held in recent days at the South
Kalimantan legislative council to condemn the governor and urge
him to resign immediately. --Antara
