Debt Collectors Commit Violence, MTF Suspends Partnership
The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has provided the latest update regarding allegations of violent actions carried out by debt collectors employed by PT Mandiri Tunas Finance (MTF). The Executive Head of Supervision for Financing Institutions and Venture Capital Companies, Agusman, stated that MTF has frozen its working relationship with the professional collector in question. “The company has suspended its working relationship with the professional collector, without diminishing the obligations and responsibilities of that party for the resulting impacts,” he said in a written statement, quoted on Thursday (9/4/2026). Agusman explained that a deeper investigation into the incident is ongoing and will be followed up in accordance with applicable regulations, including adjustments to the company’s health rating assessment, particularly in the risk profile and governance aspects. Previously, the Head of the Literacy, Financial Inclusion, and Communication Department of OJK, M. Ismail Riyadi, stated that OJK had summoned the company to request clarification and a complete explanation regarding the chronology of the incident, the involved parties, and the follow-up actions already and to be taken by the company. “From the information request conducted, OJK is delving into the details provided by MTF in line with applicable regulations. If violations of the applicable regulations are proven, OJK will impose firm sanctions on MTF in accordance with the provisions,” quoting OJK’s official statement, Wednesday (25/2/2026). OJK emphasised that debt collection processes by financial service institutions must be carried out in accordance with legal regulations, upholding ethics, and prioritising consumer protection. Any form of violence cannot be justified. OJK urged all financial service institutions to ensure that collection activities, including those conducted through third parties, are carried out professionally, in compliance with applicable regulations, and without using intimidatory or violent methods. OJK will continue to monitor the developments of this case and take supervisory actions within its authority.
