The Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) has conveyed deep condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, amid escalating Israeli-American military attacks on 28 February 2026.

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un [Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return]. Amidst our devotion to worship during the holy month of Ramadan filled with peace, a message of sorrow and profound concern has descended upon the Islamic world,” stated MUI in a statement released through its official Instagram account on Monday, 2 March 2026.

MUI assessed that the aggression occurring whilst Muslims were observing the fasting month constitutes an act that wounds human conscience and damages the spirit of global peace. According to MUI, the attacks represent far more than ordinary military conflict, but constitute a clear violation of national sovereignty and international law as outlined in the United Nations Declaration.

As a nation upholding the mandate of the 1945 Constitution, MUI emphasised that Indonesia must not remain silent witnessing violence replace diplomatic channels. From an international law perspective, Iran’s retaliatory response against military bases is regarded as a form of legitimate self-defence and is protected under international law.

Furthermore, MUI cautioned the public to be vigilant regarding alleged systematic efforts to weaken the strategic position of those who have consistently supported Palestinian independence. The escalation of conflict in the Middle East region is assessed as potentially worsening global stability and prolonging civilian suffering.
