Dealers Flooded with Sales of Used Fortuners and Pajeros: The Impact of Rising Diesel Prices
The increase in non-subsidised diesel fuel prices at Pertamina and private fuel stations has left owners of luxury diesel vehicles anxious, as the cost of filling up has surged. Some owners of luxury diesel vehicles are even contemplating selling their cars or trading them in for used models.
However, at the WTC Mangga Dua used car sales centre in North Jakarta, the rise in non-subsidised diesel prices has not yet led to an influx of used vehicles such as the Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, and Toyota Innova Reborn.
Based on observations by CNBC Indonesia on Wednesday (22/4/2026), most dealers stated that the diesel price increase has not affected sales of the Fortuner, Pajero, and Innova. Julian, one of them, noted that sales of solar-powered Fortuner, Pajero, and Innova Reborn models remain steady.
“Regarding the impact of the non-subsidised diesel price rise, there hasn’t been any yet—no one is selling Fortuners or Pajeros,” Julian told CNBC Indonesia on Sunday (26/4/2026).
Prices are still around Rp400 million to Rp500 million for Fortuners and Pajeros.
“Prices are still normal; a 2018 Pajero Dakar is still in the Rp400 millions, and a Fortuner 2.8 VRZ GR Sport is Rp475 million,” Julian continued.
Meanwhile, another used car dealer, Tono, admitted that sales and prices for Fortuners, Pajeros, and Innova Reborns remain normal.
“There hasn’t been any price drop, not even a fall; those selling aren’t doing so because diesel is expensive—it’s still business as usual,” Tono said.
He explained that Fortuners and Pajeros remain popular, particularly among buyers outside Java, due to the rough road conditions there.
“Interest in Fortuners and Pajeros is still high, especially in areas outside Java, where roads aren’t as good as in Java, and these vehicles are the right fit,” he added.
Tono revealed that the non-subsidised diesel price increase won’t have a major impact on users of these vehicles, as many find ways to fill up with subsidised biodiesel or diesel.
“For Japanese cars, it’s easy to work around; unlike South Korean cars that are sensitive to subsidised diesel, Fortuners and Pajeros can handle it, but you just need to diligently change the tank filter every five months,” he said.
Similarly, another used car dealer, Diah, stated that sales of Innova Reborn remain normal with no price reductions.
“There are still plenty of people looking for Innova Reborns; even if they plan to use biodiesel later, it’s no issue,” Diah said.
At her shop, 2023-2024 diesel Innova Reborn models are priced from Rp375 million to Rp450 million.
