Danger! Iran Threatens to Close 3 Vital World Waterways, Not Just Hormuz

Tensions between Iran and the United States have reignited. Beyond the Strait of Hormuz, Tehran is now threatening to block shipping in three strategic global sea routes: the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, and the Red Sea.

This move is described as a response to pressure from Washington, which has restricted the movement of Iranian ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The restrictions were imposed after negotiations between the two countries reached a deadlock.

Representatives from Iran’s military command have emphasised that halting commercial shipping activities in these three strategic waterways could occur if pressure on Iran’s maritime shipments continues. Meanwhile, Iran’s Chief of Staff, Ali Abdollahi, stated that such additional blockade measures could be categorised as violations of the ceasefire regime.

“We will not allow any exports or imports through these major waterways,” he asserted, as quoted by BBC on Friday (17/4/2026).

On the other side, the US maintains that its restriction policy aims to control shipping routes linked to Iran. However, Tehran deems the action illegal and provocative.

Iran’s threats have drawn global attention because these three sea routes are the ‘lifeblood’ of world trade. A significant portion of global crude oil distribution passes through this region. Disruptions in the area could spark surges in energy prices and disrupt global supply chains.

Several analysts have warned that escalating conflict could directly impact world oil prices. If distribution is disrupted, energy prices risk a sharp spike, which could ultimately drive global inflation.

To date, diplomatic efforts are still ongoing. Options for extending the ceasefire and reopening negotiations are being discussed, but no concrete agreement has been reached between the two parties.
