Danger: Do Not Convert Car Cabin Into a Bed During Mudik Travel
Jakarta – During Lebaran mudik travel in private vehicles, many families frequently modify the cabin to create more space. One common practice is folding the rear seats and placing a mattress or thick cushion, transforming the cabin into a “giant bed”. The aim is typically to allow children to sleep or rest more comfortably during long journeys. However, such practices are actually very dangerous and not recommended from a road safety perspective.
“This is not recommended and is very dangerous when the vehicle is moving and suddenly stops,” said Jusri to Kompas.com recently. According to him, when a car brakes suddenly, unsecured objects inside the cabin will continue moving at the vehicle’s previous speed. “When the vehicle stops suddenly, unsecured objects will still move at their original speed before deceleration,” Jusri explained.
“Imagine if that were a baby or passenger struck by iron objects or other items inside the car. That is very dangerous, especially if the items can fold or shift position,” he added. Jusri further noted that in the event of an accident, objects inside the car can be thrown in various directions and potentially injure passengers. “If an accident occurs, these objects can be thrown everywhere. It is like items placed inside a tin can being shaken around, like marbles in a tin can,” he said.
“Therefore, such behaviour is not recommended at all in the context of defensive driving, and should not be permitted,” Jusri stated. To ensure journey comfort, drivers can arrange regular rest breaks at rest areas, allowing passengers, particularly children, to rest safely.
