Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Daya Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Agency (BPI Danantara) will announce the winners of the first phase of Waste to Energy (WTE) project auctions by the end of February 2026.

BPI Danantara CEO Rosan Roeslani explained that the WTE project is one of the government’s key focuses in addressing the country’s enormous waste problem. National waste volume currently stands at approximately 60 million tonnes per year, with around 87 per cent remaining unmanaged.

“We started the first batch last November under the direction of the Coordinating Minister for Food, and we will announce the winners tentatively by the end of February,” said Rosan at the Indonesia Economic Outlook 2026 event at Wisma Danantara, Jakarta, on Friday (13/2/2026).

Following the completion of the first phase, Rosan said Danantara would proceed with the second phase of WTE projects covering seven cities. The process will commence once the selection of cities has been finalised.

“Once the cities are confirmed, we will then be given the go-ahead for an open tender, so the second batch will begin in March, possibly after consultation with the Coordinating Minister for Food,” he said.

Previously, Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Yuliot Tanjung stated that the waste-to-energy power plant (PLTSa) projects had attracted interest from investors in several countries. He said his ministry, together with BPI Danantara, was currently identifying technology partners to ensure the projects run efficiently. At least three countries have expressed interest in participating in the PLTSa projects.

“For PLTSa technology partners, we have already carried out identification. The identification we have conducted is based on technology vendors. There are vendors from Japan, Europe, and also from China,” said Yuliot at the Ministry of ESDM office on Friday (7/11/2025).

Yuliot explained that the selection of partners would take into account which technology could generate energy most efficiently. Additionally, the partnership mechanism must allow electricity produced by PLTSa plants to be absorbed by PLN as the offtaker.

“So for technology vendors, it will come down to which can generate energy more efficiently from PLTSa. And also how the PLTSa process can have its offtaker taken up by PLN,” he said.
