Danantara Targets Land 400 Metres from Masjidil Haram for Hajj Village
Presidential Special Envoy for Energy and Environment Hashim Djojohadikusumo stated that Danantara Indonesia is currently targeting a strategic plot of land in Mecca. The targeted land is approximately 400 metres from Masjidil Haram.
“This month, Mr Rosan from Danantara is bidding against dozens of competitors to secure land 400 metres from Masjidil Haram,” Hashim said in Jakarta on Thursday (23/4/2026).
The location is chosen with consideration for the condition of Indonesian Hajj pilgrims. Many pilgrims are elderly, aged between 60 and 70 years.
“Indonesian pilgrims to the Holy Land are mostly elderly, aged 60–70 years. They have to walk 9–10 km,” Hashim said.
Hashim mentioned that the area will be developed into an integrated complex. Initial plans include the construction of around 15 towers.
“I hear they plan to build about 15 towers in the first location. There will be other places, like Padang rice restaurants or Acehnese restaurants. The elderly can rest there,” he said.
He assessed this project as a breakthrough in Hajj services. Facilities close to Masjidil Haram are expected to have a direct positive impact on Indonesian pilgrims.
Hashim also linked this plan to support from Saudi Arabia. President Prabowo is said to have obtained commitments from the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman.
“Indonesia gets a place close to the Kaaba, close to Masjidil Haram. 2.5 km. This has a very positive impact on Muslims in Indonesia,” Hashim said.
The project is expected to strengthen the global halal ecosystem. Economic impacts are also targeted to increase through multiplier effects from Hajj and Umrah activities.
