JAKARTA — The government’s efforts to significantly expand the use of solar power plants (PLTS) continue to demonstrate positive progress. Most recently, through assistance from Danantara Indonesia, PT PLN (Persero) signed an Operational Cooperation Agreement (KSO) with the Sumenep Regency Government at Wisma Danantara in Jakarta on Friday, 13 March 2026.

This cooperation aims to utilise two PLTS facilities, each with a capacity of 1 megawatt peak (MWp) and equipped with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a capacity of 4 megawatt hours (MWh). These facilities are donations from the Torang IWIP Berbakti Foundation.

Witnessed directly by Danantara Indonesia Chief Executive Officer Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, this initiative represents cross-sector collaboration in expanding access to clean energy whilst promoting equal electricity distribution, particularly in remote and disadvantaged regions (3T).

Rosan emphasised that this step also aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s vision to accelerate the dedieselisation programme, which aims to replace diesel power plants (PLTD) with renewable energy-based generation facilities such as PLTS. As a country with abundant solar energy potential, Rosan continued, the government has targeted PLTS deployment to reach 100 gigawatts (GW) capacity within the coming years as part of efforts to strengthen national energy security and self-sufficiency.

“Much diesel usage will be replaced by PLTS, which will create positive impacts, especially regarding future energy self-sufficiency,” he stated.

Rosan noted that utilisation of the grants at these two locations will serve as a pilot project expected to deliver tangible benefits by providing electricity to thousands of households in Sumenep Regency.

“It will provide light to 2,000 households across the two areas—in Gili Labak Hamlet and Pagerungan Kecil Village, each with 1 MW capacity. This will serve as a pilot project and hopefully can be realised soon,” Rosan said.

Previously, residents of Gili Labak Hamlet in Kombang Village, Talango District, used private generators to power lights and household electronics. For residents of Pagerungan Kecil Village in Sapeken District, this donated PLTS will supplement electricity currently provided by a 50 kilowatt peak (kWp) PLN PLTS facility. Two diesel power units operated by the village-owned enterprise (BUMDes) with a combined capacity of 600 kilovolt amperes (kVA) are now defunct.

The grant comprises two PLTS units, each with a capacity of 1 MWp equipped with BESS systems with a capacity of 4 MWh. The installation projected to be built will supply electricity to residents for a full 24 hours and has the potential to save fuel oil consumption by approximately 1.1 million litres annually.
