Danantara CEO Rosan Roeslani has spoken out regarding plans to acquire shares in the French company Eramet in the nickel company in Weda Bay, specifically PT Weda Bay Nickel (WBN). Rosan stated that the share acquisition is indeed wide open. His side has already initiated discussions with Eramet, emphasising that Danantara is ready to become a strong partner from Indonesia for the nickel development project. “We are basically open, yes, to discussions and talks regarding investments in Indonesia, and Danantara can become a strong local partner as well. We are open, of course. We are also discussing with Eramet,” Rosan explained at the Presidential Palace in Central Jakarta on Tuesday (12/5/2026). For information, Weda Bay Nickel has been operating since 2019 through a special mining business licence (IUPK) and will operate until 2069. The company is operated by Tsingshan Group, a Chinese company that holds 51.2% of the shares, Eramet (from France) 37.8%, and the remainder is owned by the Indonesian state-owned company PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) Tbk (ANTM) or Antam with a 10% stake. Previously, last year, BPI Danantara conducted an investment collaboration on a nickel downstream project with the French mining giant Eramet. Danantara and Eramet agreed to explore the formation of a strategic investment platform in the nickel sector, from upstream to downstream operations. The signing of this collaboration was witnessed directly by President Prabowo Subianto and French President Emmanuel Macron during a bilateral meeting at Merdeka Palace in Central Jakarta. This partnership aims to develop a sustainable and integrated ecosystem for electric vehicle (EV) battery raw materials in Indonesia. The parties will conduct an initial assessment to identify the most suitable projects to maximise the potential of the national EV ecosystem, while preparing a roadmap for future collaboration. In implementing this cooperation, the parties agreed that asset management must not only prioritise efficiency and economic value but also be based on strict international standards. Danantara Indonesia’s Chief Investment Officer (CIO) Pandu Sjahrir believes this partnership will strengthen Indonesia’s position as a global hub in the EV battery supply chain. Pandu explained that in this partnership, Danantara will manage long-term financing to support investment development, while Eramet contributes through technical expertise and experience in running large-scale mining projects in accordance with international sustainability standards. “This partnership reflects a commitment to promoting world-class nickel downstream investments in Indonesia, which is one of the main pillars in strengthening national industrial competitiveness. This collaboration also integrates world-class technical capabilities in environmentally conscious mining that supports sustainable industrial development,” Pandu added.
