Jakarta (ANTARA) — The Daya Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Agency (BPI Danantara) has begun construction of permanent housing in Rambatan sub-district, Tanah Datar regency, as a step towards accelerating post-disaster recovery whilst driving economic revival for communities in West Sumatra.

The groundbreaking for the permanent housing took place on Thursday as part of a comprehensive recovery strategy that not only provides shelter for affected residents but also strengthens the region’s social and economic conditions.

Danantara Chief Operating Officer Dony Oskaria said in a statement received in Jakarta on Thursday that the permanent housing construction carries broader significance for the community.

“This permanent housing is not merely about homes. It is a symbol of economic and mental revival. West Sumatra must rise again. We were once in the best position, and today we find ourselves in the second-worst position nationally,” said Dony Oskaria, who also serves as Head of the State-Owned Enterprises Regulatory Agency (BP BUMN).

He disclosed that West Sumatra’s economic growth currently stands at around 3.5 per cent, with inflation reaching 6 per cent. This situation, he said, has the potential to trigger social problems if not addressed promptly.

Dony added that Tanah Datar regency is expected to become a model area for economic recovery in West Sumatra. Beyond the permanent housing construction, Danantara is also promoting the strengthening of the education and community economic sectors, including through plans to build a Sekolah Rakyat (People’s School).

“The Sekolah Rakyat will accommodate approximately 3,000 students with free, quality education from primary through to senior secondary level, complete with boarding facilities,” he said.
