The Indonesian government’s efforts to promote renewable energy utilisation continue to gain momentum. Through the assistance of Danantara Indonesia, PT PLN (Persero) signed an Operational Cooperation Agreement (KSO) with Sumenep Regency Government to optimise the utilisation of Solar Power Generation Plants (PLTS) on Friday, 13 March 2026.

The cooperation encompasses the operation of two PLTS units, each with a capacity of 1 megawatt peak (MWp) equipped with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) of 4 megawatt hour (MWh) capacity. The project is a donation from the Torang IWIP Berbakti Foundation, signed at Wisma Danantara, Jakarta.

The signing of this cooperation agreement was witnessed directly by CEO Danantara Indonesia, Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, who emphasised that this initiative represents genuine cross-sectoral collaboration in expanding access to clean energy, particularly in disadvantaged, frontier, and outlying regions (3T).

According to Rosan, this step aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s vision in accelerating the dedieselisation programme, which replaces diesel-powered generators with renewable energy-based generators such as PLTS.

“Much of the diesel usage will be replaced by PLTS, thereby delivering positive impacts, particularly in realising energy self-sufficiency going forward,” he stated.

He added that the project will serve as a pilot providing direct benefits to approximately 2,000 households in Gili Labak Hamlet and Pagerungan Kecil Village, Sumenep Regency.

Previously, communities in Gili Labak Hamlet relied on private generators to meet their electricity needs. Meanwhile, in Pagerungan Kecil Village, electricity supply remained limited and partly dependent on diesel generators that had ceased operation.

With the PLTS and BESS donation, electricity supply in both areas is projected to be available around the clock. Additionally, the use of this clean energy has the potential to save diesel fuel consumption by up to 1.1 million litres annually.

Head of Torang IWIP Berbakti Foundation, Wahyu Budhi Santoso, stated that this donation represents part of the foundation’s commitment to supporting equitable energy access distribution in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Sumenep Regent, Achmad Fauzi Wongsojudo, appreciated the collaboration. He considered the project highly important given that Sumenep Regency has island characteristics with 126 islands, of which 48 are inhabited.

PLN President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo, affirmed that this cooperation represents an important momentum in driving energy transition whilst expanding equitable electricity access across the nation.

“PLN is prepared to follow up on this cooperation so that the utilisation of the donated PLTS can be realised promptly and deliver reliable electricity to the community,” stated Darmawan.

He also emphasised the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration in accelerating the national dedieselisation programme, in line with the target of developing PLTS capacity up to 100 gigawatt (GW) in the coming years.

Through synergy among various stakeholders, the project is expected not only to increase the electrification ratio but also strengthen national energy resilience based on environmentally friendly resources.
