Jakarta — The Investment Management Agency for Nusantara’s Future Power (Danantara), working with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) through the Directorate General of Research and Development, is strengthening the foundation of research and the national semiconductor industry ecosystem from upstream to downstream.

The two organisations collaborated in organising a workshop entitled “Accelerating the Development of Indonesia’s Semiconductor Industry and Research Ecosystem”, bringing together government, universities, research institutions, and industry players to develop more integrated development strategies.

Danantara’s Chief Technology Officer Sigit Puji Santosa stated in an official statement in Jakarta on Saturday that the momentum for developing the national semiconductor industry is wide open amid the emergence of a new chapter in the global industry.

“There is no such thing as being too late in building a national semiconductor industry. Currently, the world is entering a new chapter, particularly in AI chip development. This presents an opportunity for Indonesia to enter at the right moment with the foundation of collaboration, talent strengthening, and product development relevant to industry needs,” Sigit said.

According to him, developing the national semiconductor ecosystem requires strong orchestration, ranging from establishing priority product lists, design, fabrication readiness, human resource development, to developing business models and economic valuations.

“What we need now is clarity on priority products, design, roadmap, and roles distributed in a well-orchestrated manner,” he said.

He assured that the government will provide support through regulation and standardisation, whilst industry needs to be at the forefront because what is being built is no longer merely a research project, but an investment project that must produce economically viable and commercially feasible products.

According to him, developing the national semiconductor industry requires close cooperation across stakeholders.

“Universities and research institutions are expected to remain sources of innovation and strengthening the technological foundation, whilst industry plays an important role in directing market needs, accelerating adoption, and ensuring that the innovations developed truly have economic viability,” he said.

Strengthening this ecosystem is aligned with Indonesia’s efforts to build the foundation of the national semiconductor industry through strategic partnerships with global industry.

The collaboration of both parties aims to strengthen national capability in the semiconductor value chain, particularly in chip design mastery and product development, whilst opening space for strengthening capacity and semiconductor talent competency within the Indonesian industry and higher education sectors.

The workshop is targeting three main outputs, including establishing priority semiconductor products, formulating talent development plans, and formulating a five-year collaboration roadmap to accelerate downstream development and strengthening of the national semiconductor ecosystem.

This activity is expected to be a concrete step to accelerate the emergence of Indonesia’s flagship semiconductor products ready to enter the advanced development stage, industrialisation, and actual application in nationally strategic sectors.
