Damri prepares 1,800 buses to serve projected 2.7 million Lebaran homebound travellers in 2026
Damri is preparing up to 1,800 buses to serve the surge in mobility during Lebaran 2026, with a projection of around 2.7 million homebound travellers during the mudik period this year.
For Damri’s readiness in mudik transport services, we are operating around 1,800 units,” said Wahyu Susilo, Vice President of Operations and Safety at Damri, in Jakarta on Friday.
“To ensure readiness, the fleet of this size forms part of Damri’s support for the smooth operation of transportation during the mudik season, which every year increases movement of people to various destinations across Indonesia,” he added.
Mudik Lebaran has become an annual tradition in Indonesia that drives high demand for public transport services, including intercity buses linking major cities to destination towns for homebound travellers.
To cope with the surge, Damri plans to operate an average of 1,582 fleet units per day during the Lebaran transport period, which lasts several weeks.
During the peak exodus, the number of buses operated is expected to rise to around 1,800 units to ensure that the transport needs of the public are met.
In addition to providing regular transport services, Damri also participates in the government-run free mudik programme, a State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) initiative.
He said participation in the free mudik programme is a form of Damri’s contribution to help people return home safely and affordably.
The free mudik programme is also expected to help reduce congestion from private vehicles on roads while improving travel safety during the national mudik period.
He further stated that demand for Damri bus services during the mudik season is expected to rise, particularly on intercity routes connecting Jakarta with major homebound destinations.
Some destinations that typically see increased passenger numbers include Central Java, East Java, Bali, Lampung, and various major cities on Sumatra.
The surge in passengers on these routes shows the high demand for road transport capable of reaching mudik destinations directly.
In addition to intercity transport, increases in passenger numbers are also expected on the airport shuttle services operated by Damri during the Lebaran holiday period.
The airport shuttle service acts as a connector for people travelling by air to their destination city, or from the airport to various regions.
Through fleet readiness and enhanced services, Damri aims to ensure all customers can undertake their mudik journeys comfortably and on time.
This step is part of Damri’s commitment as a national road transport operator to support smooth mobility during the mudik and balik Lebaran periods.
On the fleet side, the company conducts thorough checks or ramp checks to ensure all buses are roadworthy before serving passengers.
Through this monitoring and thorough inspection system, Damri hopes all homebound journeys can be safe, orderly, and minimise operational disruptions.
