Damage to Street Lights and Ornaments Visible on Kabanaran Bridge in Yogyakarta
Several street light poles (PJU) installed on the Kabanaran Bridge in Srandakan, Bantul have broken, with metal components of the bridge’s decorative Gunungan ornament also becoming detached.
Observations revealed multiple broken street lights on both sides of the bridge. When approaching from the east, one street light on the southern side appeared broken, with additional broken poles visible on the northern side. Further west of the Gunungan ornament, two more street lights on the northern side were damaged, alongside another broken pole on the western side of the ornament.
The decorative Gunungan ornament on the southern side of the bridge had metal components that were close to detaching. Upon closer inspection, portions of the ironwork appeared to be gaping open and nearly severing. Several metal sections were held in place with plastic cord, indicating they too were on the verge of loosening.
According to Yayak, a 50-year-old snack vendor sheltering beneath the Gunungan ornament, the street lights broke and the ornamental metal peeled away on Wednesday, 4 March 2026 around 14:00, during heavy rain accompanied by strong winds. Yayak stated that the poles likely could not withstand the intense wind gusts, noting that the welded joints and heavy upper sections may have contributed to the failure. Fortunately, the broken poles fell away from the roadway due to the direction of the wind.
Regarding the ornamental metal detachment, Yayak confirmed this also occurred on Wednesday during the heavy winds. He took initiative to secure one of the loosened metal pieces with a plastic cord to prevent it from being lost. Despite the structural damage, the bridge itself appeared reasonably clean, with minimal debris visible.
