Dam to be built in Ragunan zoo

JAKARTA (JP): The Ragunan Zoo Authority will build a dam at the zoo complex in a bid to help secure an adequate supply of water.

Helmy AR Shuhyab, a member of the City Council, told Antara on Thursday that the dam project will be built on a plot of land covering seven to 12 hectares at a cost of about Rp 15 billion (US$6.8 million). He did not disclose when the project will begin or how long the construction work will take.

He said that Ragunan Zoo, which has a collection of 3,600 animals of 372 species, uses about 1,800 cubic meters of water per day.

The zoo has a total area of 135 hectares, of which only 81 hectares have so far been utilized, he said. (hhr)
