Indonesian Customs (Bea Cukai) and the National Police Criminal Investigation Division (Bareskrim Polri) raided a methamphetamine production laboratory in the Sunter area of North Jakarta. During the operation, evidence including 13 kilogrammes of methamphetamine was seized.

Director of Narcotics Interdiction at Customs, R. Syarif Hidayat, said the case was uncovered through a series of international parcel surveillance operations and intelligence development conducted between 13-15 February 2026.

"Operations were carried out at several locations, namely apartments in the Pluit and Sunter areas as well as a restaurant in East Jakarta," said Syarif in a statement on Wednesday (16 February).

Syarif revealed the case originated from the suspicions of Customs officers whilst inspecting postal consignments from Iran using an X-ray scanning machine at the Pasar Baru Post Office on Thursday (12 February).

Officers discovered blue crystals concealed within the walls of a leather crate packaging, which upon testing proved positive for Class I narcotics — methamphetamine — weighing approximately 11.56 kilogrammes.

The evidence was subsequently handed over to Sub-Directorate V of the Narcotics Crime Directorate at Bareskrim Polri for a controlled delivery operation.

Through case development, on Friday (13 February) authorities apprehended an Iranian national with the initials KKF as the package recipient at an apartment in Pluit.

On Saturday (14 February), the team arrested another suspect, an Iranian national with the initials SB, alleged to have served as the methamphetamine processor. On the same day, the team also raided an apartment in Sunter that had been converted into a methamphetamine production laboratory.

At the laboratory site, officers discovered an additional 1,683 grammes of methamphetamine along with various production equipment including a portable stove, scales, chemical liquids, powder grinding tools, and processing waste residue. On Sunday (15 February), the joint team conducted a forensic crime scene examination.

"These findings confirm that the network served as both recipients of goods and domestic reprocessors of narcotics," he said.

He also emphasised that the disclosure carried significant implications for public safety.

"This enforcement action represents a tangible form of protection for the community. Every kilogramme of narcotics whose circulation is successfully thwarted means we are preventing potential damage to thousands of young people and safeguarding the social resilience of Indonesian families," said Syarif.

The presence of a narcotics laboratory in a densely populated residential area posed significant risks, including drug abuse as well as potential fire hazards and exposure to toxic chemicals.

The dismantling of the methamphetamine laboratory was therefore considered to provide direct benefits in the form of enhanced security for local residents and prevention of environmental health risks.

All evidence and suspects are currently undergoing further examination. Authorities continue to conduct in-depth investigations to trace the international network involved.

"This cross-institutional synergy is expected to continue narrowing the space for narcotics distribution whilst ensuring the public enjoys a safer, healthier, and more productive environment," said Syarif.
