Curse on litterbugs

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP): Malaysian litterbugs have been threatened with hefty fines and community work. Now, they also run the risk of being struck barren.

A lawmaker told Parliament on Thursday that she had spotted a very effective signboard in southern Johor state that reads, "Whoever Throws Rubbish Indiscriminately Will Never Be Blessed With Children And Grandchildren."

"Of course, the area is clean," Chang See Ten was quoted as saying by the national news agency, Bernama.

Chang, who belongs to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's ruling National Front coalition, urged authorities to consider imposing a higher fine on litterbugs.

Under existing anti-litter measures, offenders are fined between 500 ringgit (US$132) and 1,000 ringgit ($263).

The government says it spent 35.4 million ringgit ($9.3 million) between 1996 and last year on clean-up operations nationwide.
