Curly Chilli Prices Soar in Jakarta as Pramono Reveals Root Cause
Jakarta — Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has said that curly chilli prices in the capital have risen drastically, revealing several factors behind the surge.
“There has indeed been a rise in curly chilli prices,” Pramono told reporters at Jakarta City Hall on Thursday, 19 February 2026.
Pramono explained that one of the key factors was heavy rainfall, which had caused a decline in chilli supply.
“Why have curly chilli prices gone up? The supply from Java and South Sulawesi has decreased in quantity because of rain. So the heavy rainfall has caused a reduction,” he said.
Nevertheless, Pramono noted that rainfall has begun to subside. He expressed confidence that market prices for chillies would decline in the coming weeks.
“But now that rainfall is starting to decrease, I am confident that within one to two weeks chilli prices in Jakarta can return to normal,” Pramono said.
“Why can they return to normal? Because we will intervene. We will purchase chillies and then sell them to retailers or traders, providing a margin of Rp5,000 so that prices are controlled. I am confident that with this approach we can certainly control inflation in Jakarta. And we have already begun doing this,” he concluded.
