Culture Minister Reveals Plans for Installing Chattra on Borobudur Temple Peak
Culture Minister Fadli Zon has revealed the progress on installing a chattra on the peak of Borobudur Temple. Fadli Zon stated that the chattra to be installed is not made from stone.
“(The material is truly from bronze, not stone) No, no. Not from stone. It’s an adaptation, so to speak,” said Fadli Zon, as quoted by detikJateng on Saturday (18/4/2026).
Fadli Zon explained that the raw material for the chattra will be much lighter than stone. He noted that such chattra are installed at sites across various countries.
“It’s an adaptation, so it’s much lighter. It’s used at all sites, even at the birthplace of the Buddha. Similarly in India, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar,” he continued.
He hopes that the presence of the chattra will attract tourists to visit Borobudur Temple. He expressed hope that Buddhists from around the world will come to Borobudur Temple.
“With that, more people will come, both tourists for historical reasons and for religious reasons. Hopefully, more Buddhists from around the world will come here (to Borobudur Temple),” he said.
“The global Buddhist population is around 500 to 600 million, I believe. Even one percent would be 5-6 million,” he added.
