Cuba: US military aggression threats intensify

Cuba’s government stated on Friday (29 May) that threats of US military aggression are intensifying amid economic pressure and tightened sanctions. ‘The danger of military aggression against Cuba is rising daily,’ said Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Josefina Vidal Ferreiro during a parliamentary session. Ferreiro said the US had escalated economic pressure on Cuba in recent months through restrictive measures aimed at crippling the economy and triggering a humanitarian crisis. ‘The economic war imposed over six decades ago has been tightened in ways never seen before in recent months,’ she added. She accused the US of creating new pretexts to increase pressure on Cuba and potentially justify military action. She also noted Cuba had criticised allegations against revolutionary leader Raul Castro, calling them baseless and inflammatory insinuations. Ferreiro stated Cuba poses no threat and engages in no hostile activities towards the US. ‘Cuba does not seek conflict. We have always been a nation that upholds peace, solidarity, and mutual respect in relations with other countries,’ she said. She affirmed Cuba would defend its sovereignty and independence if faced with aggression. In January, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order allowing tariffs on oil imports to Cuba and declaring a national emergency over alleged Cuban threats to US national security. The Cuban government said the US measures have worsened fuel shortages, affecting power generation, transportation, food production, healthcare, and education.
